Scott Schmidt gained recognition by leaping off cliffs.

For Scott, the route to the edge of a cliff began in Helena, Montana, and had its roots in a promising racing career. After graduating from high school in 1979, Scott moved west to Squaw Valley to continue the search for points and ever higher rungs on the competition ladder.

"My goal at the time was to be a professional ski racer," Scott said. "My points were really good, but I didn't have the money to travel and go to the FIS races that I qualified for.

"I was working five days a week and racing and training on weekends. That’s when my results got worse and worse. I wanted to race professionally, but there weren't any B circuits at that time, so I just raced in fun races.

"I worked for the race department in Squaw Valley as a pace setter and a course setter for the Nastar program."

Squaw Valley has terrain that can be a challenge to any skier accustomed to speed. Scott's adventures in the upper reaches of Squaw Valley led to his first appearance in a Warren Miller film.

"I had developed a reputation as being one of the more daring skiers at Squaw Valley. One day Warren Miller showed up with a camera crew and they asked me to ski for them.

"We had a perfect day - the snow was good, everything right for jumping and skiing some chutes. When Warren Miller saw the footage, he was really impressed.

"I got a letter a couple of weeks later saying that it was the most exciting footage he'd seen in a long time and asked me if I would be interested in going along the next time he filmed in a foreign country. I wrote back and said yes."

Scott Schmidt's first appearance in a Warren Miller movie was in "Ski Time" doing what he does best at Squaw Valley. He appeared again in "Ski Country" and" Steep and Deep" skiing in New Zealand, and is back again this year skiing in the Alps in "Beyond the Edge."

Jumping for Scott is that extra dimension that most of us look for but rarely find in our own skiing.

"Jumping is a little like downhill racing. I free ski mostly on 220 cm downhill racing skis. Squaw Valley is good for jumping, because it's well groomed and you can get a lot of speed. There are cornices, ridges and cliffs. It's fun going fast off those things."

"My racing background helps my jumping ability. I don't know what makes me any better than anyone else. But I guess it's being used to speed. Downhill was my best event. I always enjoyed downhill racing.

"I had considered doing some speed skiing, but I'm not too interested. It involves a lot of sidestepping. You spend all day getting up the mountain for one or two runs. It is also expensive. I didn't have the money for the suit, the helmet and all the special equipment it takes."

Is it possible to make a living on skis without being a world-class racer?

"There isn't a lot of money in making ski movies, but I've been happy to do it. It's been a living. I've been able to travel all over the world, so I can't hold down a regular job. I spent most of last winter in Europe and some time this summer in Argentina. We had a fantastic time.

"I'm signing sponsor contracts this year. It's mainly because of my being in Warren's movies that all these things are happening. The guys in Warren's office are really good and they are doing a lot of negotiating for me. They're good to work with."

After traveling in Europe and skiing in New Zealand and South America, Scott still considers Squaw Valley his favorite place to ski.

"I like Squaw Valley," Scott said, "but because of insurance rates, some of the steepest chutes and places we used to ski have been closed. So the good old days are gone. We can't do what we used to do.

"There's no problem like that in Europe. That's why I enjoy Europe so much. You can do whatever you want to do. Everything is so much bigger and it's not patrolled the way it is in the U.S. You have to be very careful. There is avalanche danger and there are glaciers everywhere, so there are holes and crevasses to look out for. It can be dangerous."

In Europe, Scott worked with two different cameramen. Fletcher Manley was in Europe for about six weeks, and Gary Nate shot additional footage near the end of the season. For Scott, it was his first trip to Europe and first experience traveling in Europe.

"The weather was really never very good," Scott said. "There were very few sunny days, and we sat around for weeks waiting for the sun to come out. The skiing was about like I expected. The areas are just so big. The things you can do there are endless.

"But the jumbos I've done at Squaw Valley will be the biggest I'll do. I think I've reached my limit and I don't expect to jump any higher than I already have.

"I've probably jumped 130 feet, vertically about 80 feet. That's about like jumping off the top of an eight-story building. The last big jump I did, I was coming in so fast that it was really scary - but that's what made it so much fun. After that landing, I knew I couldn't go much higher.

"I've always liked the challenge. Sometimes I'm not sure I want to do what I'm doing, but I'll end up doing it anyway because I like pushing myself. I think that's the greatest thrill."

Cliff jumping isn't a subject likely to be taught in even the most advanced ski classes, so anyone interested in exploring that other world will be self taught.

"You don't want to go up there and start leaping off things," Scott said. "I worked myself up to the bigger things by starting off with little cornices and cliffs. I got a pretty good feel for what I could handle and what I couldn't

"At Squaw Valley we had the 90 meter Olympic jump. Four years ago we could pack it out and run that. I think going off the 90-meter hill on downhill skis was one of the greatest thrills I've ever had.

"We did it a number of times. We would just climb all morning, ump and then go skiing in the afternoon. We got about the same distance with downhill skis as we would have with jumping skis. We were landing on the lower end of the steep section just before the compression. I'm not sure how far it is - almost 90 meters."

Although skiing north of the equator in the winter and south of the equator in the summer make skiing almost a year around occupation, Scott has been developing his boardsailing skills while living in Santa Cruz, California.

"I'm starting to get into it professionally," Scott said. "I’m sponsored by O'Niell, The North Face and Windwing designs. Windwing makes my sails.

"Windsurfing is definitely an advanced sport. With eight-foot wave boards, the thrill is the same as skiing. It's not one of the most difficult things I've learned, but it's good for me because I'm learning something new. I've done so much skiing it's nice to get the same thrill out of doing something else."

After a few days windsurfing in the fall, Scott was scheduled to appear with Warren Miller at some of the showings of "Beyond the Edge."

"It's fun seeing the response of the audience to the movie," Scott said. "People really enjoy the shows - they're great. It's fun to share that experience.

"I know there are a lot of kids gunning for me now. When I do the shows and they see what I do, they think I have the greatest job in the world. There will probably be some young guys going for it. I like that. You know the kind: He hops the first chairlift in the morning and hits the steep and the deep all day long, following (or leading) his master, Scott Kennett, down the fabled ski resort’s well respected drops.

That may be commonplace in the town Butch Cassidy once shot up, but in the real world, a hot skiing pooch is news. Zudnick, in film parlance at least, is now officially dubbed “a Wonder Dog.”

He spent most of May and June delighting our preview audiences with his spectacular descent down the “Plunge,” Telluride’s most popular precipice, right behind Kennett who was supposed to be the “hero” of the segment.

But, when our cameraman Brian Sisselman spotted Zudnick – part Huskie, part wolf – casually riding the lift up and then bounding down the Plunge, he knew he had a hit scene on his hands.

Viewers are going to like Zudnick, the Wonder Dog, in ESCAPE TO SKI and are going to have a “doggone” good time in the process.

-Published in the 1988 Ski World

Neon and Near-Death Experiences: Vintage Clip of the Week

Click HERE Whether the accomplishment du jour was conquering a long-coveted expert line, or finely paralleled turns on the bunny slope, après is the one place where everyone stands on equal ground. In fact, we daresay, après-ski sessions are highlight of many ski trips.

In the last few years, there has been an abundant crop of new bars, some innovative, some traditional, but all with the same goal in mind: keep the skiing high as long as possible. And thankfully, the hottest spots in après-hedonism are no longer the dirtiest dive bars around. We’ve rounded up a sampling of what the new après scene has to offer.

Frost, Vail, Colorado: Despite the name, a cozy interior and vibe give this funky cocktail spot all it needs to provide the perfect venue to relax and indulge in the heart of Vail Village. A fun, sophisticated crowd opens the door to an alternative après scene, without the Jagerbombs, stumbling, and ski boots till midnight.

http://www.thesebastianvail.com/vail-restaurants-bars/frost-bar

Smak Bar, Telluride, CO: Located in the Hotel Madeline, right off the main plaza in Mountain Village, the new Smak Bar boasts a minimalist interior design theme and inspired year-round locavore fare. A local favorite for ski bums in duct-taped Gore-tex, as well as the gathering point for imbibing jetsetters. Don’t leave Telluride until you at least try Smak’s instantly legendary Bloody Mary.

http://www.hotelmadelinetelluride.com/restaurants-telluride-colorado.php

The Meatball Shack, Aspen, CO: Serving up Italian-inspired gourmet fare with a ski town twist, Aspen locals opened this whimsical and increasingly popular spot over this past summer. Forget the nachos – grab a beer and munch on meatball tartare wrapped with Tuscan summer truffles and lobster balls with caviar, micro chives and crème fraîche.

<a href="http://www.eataspen.com/fulllisting.php?row=612 312 S. Hyman Avenue, Aspen, CO

Rocker@Squaw, Squaw Valley, California: Inspired in part the late, Squaw-based skier Shane McConkey, Rocker celebrates the passion of all the exceptional athletes and riotous characters that the Squaw scene is known for. The bar boasts RockerTV, where revelers can upload footage of their day for a chance to join their heroes onscreen at the bar. It also offers a 5lb., $50 ‘Gnar-burger,’ in case you and nine of your friends are hungry.

http://www.squaw.com/rocker

The Handle Bar, Teton Village, WY: Just steps from the base of the lifts is this playfully named new addition to Jackson Hole’s après ski scene. With a dangerous five-hour! happy hour, casual dining options, a huge outdoor terrace and a cozy-chic locale in the slope-side Four Seasons Hotel, the Handle Bar is sure to up the après ante for the rowdy Wyoming crowd – locals and visitors alike.

http://www.fourseasons.com/jacksonhole/dining/restaurants/the_handle_bar/

Wino, Revelstoke, BC, Canada: Revelstoke’s 5,620’ vertical drop of lift-served terrain, heli and cat skiing options, and 40-60 feet of annual snowfall are capturing the attention of the industry. This is resort also knows how essential it is to celebrate after a day on the slopes. At the base of the gondola is Wino, with a Euro-après focus on wines and cocktails. Twinkling inlaid lights offset the industrial look of the bar inside, or you can head outside to kick back and enjoy the massive Selkirk views from the fire pits.

http://www.revelstoke.suttonplace.com/restaurant_bar.htm

Loft, Verbier, Switzerland: Europe is where après was born. And they don’t take it lightly. If you want to party all night in your ski boots with a wild international crowd that may or may not have a penchant for dancing on the furniture, hit up The Loft Bar. Opened by the former owners of Verbier’s popular Wonderbar, Loft offers a massive deck, spectacular scenery, and cheap drinks (which is key when coughing up Swiss francs).

Avalanche Awareness 101

Winter is finally shaping up and in full swing. Peaks and valleys are coated in white, and stoked skiers are heading to resorts, sidecountry and even farther into the backcountry in search of their very own powder stashes. Yet, anyone planning on heading out to explore the backcountry (either for the first time or for their fifteenth season) should double-check their avalanche awareness and preparation.

Backcountry skiing is becoming more popular every year due to new gear making the sport easier, safer, and more accessible. However, this means more people are putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations, and avalanche awareness and education about snow safety has never been more important.

The first step a beginning backcountry enthusiast should take is to learn about snow science and safety, and a Level 1 avalanche course is an important part of preparation. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but the majority of slide incidents that result in skier injuries or fatalities are human-triggered. Classes teach skiers about avalanche terminology, how to interpret reports on changing weather conditions, and how to measure snowpack stability, among other topics. These classes help people recognize avalanche warning signs, and hopefully how to avoid making potentially life-threatening decisions.

After a skier attends an avalanche course they should obtain proper gear, and learn how to use it. Necessary gear includes: an avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe and a pack to keep everything in. This equipment should be taken every time a skier is in avalanche terrain. Gear packs that are equipped with airbags are also becoming a staple for many frequent backcountry skiers, but they are not a substitute for snow safety knowledge and smart decisions.

Even those experienced with the backcountry take time each season to practice using their transceivers in case they have to assist in finding a buried person or ski partner. They also study the snowpack in their home region, follow the local avalanche reports, and observe weather activity while out in the backcountry, which are all good habits to follow. While traveling, talk to local avalanche professionals about current conditions, and study the local snow reports to get a better understanding of what the backcountry will look like.

And finally, accidents that happen in the backcountry don’t always involve avalanches. It is important to have some basic first aid knowledge to help with any type of accident, and taking a Wilderness First Responder course is even better. Try to keep an extra layer, water, and snacks in your pack, even if you are on a short tour. Simple gear repair tools for broken gear are also good to have, and it is also always a good idea to bring a cell phone with you in the event something goes wrong. When it comes to heading in to the backcountry, the more knowledge and preparation a skier can have the better!

For more information on where to find a course or other resources, you can contact the American Avalanche Institute.

Here is a partial list of avalanche conditions and forecast centers in the United Sates and Canada.

Colorado Avalanche Information Center

Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center

Sierra Avalanche Center

Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center

American Avalanche Association

Bridger-Teton Avalanche Forecast Center

Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Forecast Center

Utah Avalanche Center

National Avalanche Center

Canadian Avalanche Association

Teton Snowpack & Avalanche Observations

Wasatch Snowpack & Avalanche Observations

“Climb to Glory” Legacy of the 10th Mountain Ski Troopers

We collaborated with Wish of a Lifetime and The Colorado Ski Museum to produce a special 45-minute documentary that tells the story of the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troopers and how they transformed the U.S. Ski Industry after World War II.

This documentary tells the story of the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troopers and how they transformed the U.S. Ski Industry after World War II. These heroes came back from war as pioneering individuals and helped build the industry from resort development to ski instruction. “Climb to Glory” highlights their astounding impact to our country and the ski industry, while incorporating the fun and flair of traditional Warren Miller films. This premiere will not only feature this never-before-seen documentary, but it will give guests the opportunity to meet and greet original 10th Mountain Division members. This premiere will also include live music from Denver’s own, The Moderators, question and answer session with the ski troopers, and a raffle session. All contributions to the event will go to both Wish of a Lifetime and The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum.

Thursday, January 17 at The Oriental Theatre in Denver, CO. Doors open at 6pm, Premiere begins 7pm

Wish of a Lifetime was founded in 2008 by two-time Olympic skier, World Cup gold-medalist, entrepreneur and former NFL football player Jeremy Bloom. This organization aims to spread inspirational stories of hope by granting lifelong wishes to seniors ages 65 years and older who have overcome tremendous challenges in their lives. Since 2008, Wish of a Lifetime has made more than 400 hundred wishes come true for seniors, two of them being 10th Mountain Division members, Wish of Lifetime is more than delighted to promote this premiere with The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum. Founded in 1976, The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum has been passionately dedicated to safeguarding the spirit and evolution of snow sports and their contributions to Colorado’s History. This non-profit organization oversees a statewide Research and Artifact Collection Facility, programs to preserve the history of the 10th Mountain Division, a museum that serves the State of Colorado and Vail Community, and the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.

<a href="http://guestli.st/131961" When the White Stripes started in 1997 no one ever expected that a red-and-white two-piece band would take hold in the mainstream world. With the release of 2001’s White Blood Cells the band was thrust on magazine covers and captivating audiences through worldwide touring. To date White has won nine Grammys in seven different categories.

White formed a “new band of old friends” the Raconteurs in 2006 and their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers showed a markedly different side, most notably one where songwriting, vocal and guitar duties were shared. The success of their debut-single “Steady, As She Goes” proved that White’s previous accomplishments were no fluke. To take it even further, in 2009 White took to his original instrument, the drums, and started the Dead Weather with members of the Kills, Queens of the Stone Age and the Greenhornes. Releasing two albums in two years and unleashing a dark, captivating live show upon curious audiences, the Dead Weather futher-cemented Jack White’s musical versatility and range.

In January 2012 White announced the upcoming release of his debut album Blunderbuss which will be accompanied by extensive touring across the world.

Website: jackwhiteiii.com/
Facebook: facebook.com/jackwhite
YouTube: youtube.com/jackwhite

The Heavy

Many people know U.K. indie soul-rock titans The Heavy for “How You Like Me Now?," their infectious anthem that took the world by storm. Since the 4-piece band's rise to notoriety, they've gone on to play gigs in all four corners on the globe, and even wowed David Letterman (Letterman has only requested an encore twice, both times for The Heavy). 'The Glorious Dead,' released on Counter Records this past August, isn’t just The Heavy’s third full-length album: it’s also the group’s most ambitious effort, traveling sonically from the group’s South England home to America’s deep South, and beyond.

Website: theheavy.co.uk
Facebook: facebook.com/theheavy73
Myspace: myspace.com/theheavy
Twitter: twitter.com/theheavy

Bassnectar

Bassnectar is one of the longest standing and most respected artists in American electronic dance music, often referred to simply as the EDM scene. He is the original long hair behind the tables, having been in the game well before most of his contemporaries and amassing an epic fan base with over 250k tickets sold to his solo shows alone in 2011. His art brazenly oversteps the bounds of contemporary EDM, pulling from a dynamic array of source material and attracting lovers of all genres, from dubstep to metal, punk rock, hip hop, and all forms of EDM (drum & bass, trip hop, etc.) and beyond. His art is more than just an auditory experience; it serves to evoke all human senses with live shows that feature unparalleled light shows and awe-inspiring visual queues. Bassnectar intends to not only foster its own community of loyal Bass Heads, but also contribute to the global community at large through charity and social change.

Website: bassnectar.net
Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/bassnectar
Facebook: facebook.com/Bassnectar

Autism Skis at Extreme Sports Camp

Imagine a ski vacation where everyone in the family is having fun and learning to ski – including your child with autism. This gigantic sale is a magnet for shoppers on the prowl for skis, snowboards, boots, outdoor clothing, and essential accessories such as helmets, hats, goggles, and gloves. The reason: prices on last season’s inventory are marked down 40-75 percent. New to the shopping section of the Expo is an area dedicated to non-winter outdoor gear and accessories such as hiking boots, camping gear, and summer accessories with discounts up to 50 percent.

In addition to the sale, all 26 Colorado resorts have exhibit space with many of them offering “Expo-only” specials on everything from lodging, lift tickets, and lessons to discounts on dining and mountain resort activities.

The Expo gets extra kid-centric this year with the debut of the Coleman Mountain Activity Center. A star attraction is the Gibbon Slackline where kids can demo on the apparatus and watch competition. Slacklining is the act of balancing along a narrow, flexible piece of webbing that is low to the ground and firmly anchored. The sport and its athletes are currently on Madonna’s current tour where three Gibbon athletes are performing with the Material Girl. The MBS Mountainboard Demo Area will also be part of the Mountain Activity Center, giving Expo-goers the opportunity to try their all-terrain “snowboard on wheels”. The frequently mobbed ELITEAM Training Center presented by Eldora has a timed obstacle course that measures basic fitness and flexibility skills and kids can compete against their own times and each other. Other kid-magnets will be the Keystone Kidtopia bouncy castle where energetic pre-skiers and riders can bounce into the inflatable walls with reckless abandon. The Winter Park Kid’s Slope for first-time, just-thinking-about-it little skiers offers a gentle introduction to the concept of sliding downhill while for visual entertainment, the aerial trampoline exhibitions by the Skyriders presented by Crested Butte appeals to kids, teens, and their parents.

Adults can take a break from shopping and entertainment at the Rocky Mountain Brew Fest, back for the second year with a larger selection of beers and ales and more local brewers including AC Golden, Bristol Brewing, Elevation Beer Company, Great Divide Brewing, Left Hand Brewing, Odell Brewing, Grand Lake Brewing, Ska Brewing, and more.

Hours are noon to 10 pm on Friday, Nov. 2; Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 am to 8 pm; and Sunday, Nov. 4 from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission is $12 for adults or $10 with a discount coupon available in The Denver Post or at any Colorado Ski & Golf or Colorado Ski & Sports store. Discount tickets can also be purchased in advance at skisnowboardexpo.com. Kids 12 and under are free. Admission to the Rocky Mountain Brew Fest requires a Ski & Snowboard Expo ticket. Combination tickets that include admission to both Expo and the Brew Fest are $24 in advance and $27 at the door. Combo tickets include one 12-ounce beer of choice plus three 4-ounce samples. Additional sampling tickets can be purchased onsite--3 for $5, 7 for $10, and 15 for $20. The beer with the most tickets turned in for the full beer will be declared the People’s Choice Winner.

For more details and activity schedules, visit skisnowboardexpo.com.

Contact:
Joan Christensen
970-509-0710
joanccommunications@gmail.com

Bring a Friend Challenge

Current skiers and snowboarders have numerous opportunities to earn rewards this winter for helping newcomers sign up for beginner lessons from professional instructors at local venues throughout the U.S. Those who qualify for the Bring a Friend Challenge can win trips to fabulous destination resorts as well as skis, snowboards and accessories.

HEAD Wintersports, RAMP, skis.com, and snowboards.org are among numerous companies and organizations providing prizes.
